Degumming: This is the first step of the soybean oil refining process. All the phosphatides are removed in this step. The process involves mixing with hot water at 65 to 70°C, allowing it to react, and then separating the gums with centrifuges.
Neutralization and Water Washing: During this process, free fatty acids, Balance 200 ppm of phosphatides, chlorophyll and carotenes are eliminated. The oil obtained from Degumming process will be reheated again to reach 85–90°C and then 85% commercial grade phosphoric acid will be added 1–2 Kg per metric ton and allowed to react with oil to make non hydratable phosphatides to precipitate.
Bleaching: The main reason for this bleaching process is to refine the color pigments contained in the vegetable oil. Decolorization process is using white clay to adsorb unwanted pigments and then the color of soybean oil will become much lighter.
Deodorization: This is the final step of the soybean oil refining process. In this step, any remaining odors are removed from the oil.
These steps can be done using a continuous or batch process. The continuous process mainly uses centrifuge equipment. The batch process involves these four steps. The complete soya oil refining process includes degumming, deacidification, decolorization and deodorization.
