Corn Oil Processing Equipment Selection: Extraction Systems Offer High Capacity and Efficiency

Corn oil is a nutrient-rich grain-based oil extracted from corn germ. It is abundant in Vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, corn oil possesses a high smoke point, making it suitable for various cooking methods, such as deep frying. Driven by growing awareness of healthy eating and the food processing industry's demand for high-quality oils, the market for corn oil continues to expand.

In recent years, new trends in edible oil development—coupled with the diversification of oil consumption patterns—have led to a surge in consumer market demand for corn oil. However, traditional oilseed processing methods relying solely on mechanical edible oil presses are no longer sufficient to meet current market requirements. For large-scale edible oil processing plants, a purely mechanical pressing approach is not only inefficient but also leaves a high residual oil content in the press cake, thereby compromising the overall oil yield. To enhance production efficiency and maximize oil yield, high-volume edible oil processing plants are increasingly opting for solvent extraction processes—or a combined pre-pressing and extraction approach—to ensure the most thorough recovery of oils and fats.

The corn oil solvent extraction process operates on the principle of "like dissolves like." It utilizes the intermolecular attractive forces between organic solvents and oil molecules to dissolve the oil contained within the raw oil-bearing material into the solvent medium.

After undergoing pretreatment, the cellular structure of the corn germ is disrupted, transforming the raw material into a form with a significantly increased specific surface area. When this material comes into thorough contact with the solvent, the solvent rapidly penetrates the interior of the plant cells, dissolving the encapsulated oil and releasing it from the cellular matrix to form a "miscella" (a mixture of oil and solvent). Subsequently, techniques such as evaporation and stripping are employed to separate the solvent from the miscella; the recovered solvent is then recycled for reuse, thereby effectively reducing production costs. The resulting crude corn oil—which still contains impurities such as phospholipids, free fatty acids, pigments, and odor-causing compounds—must undergo a series of corn oil refining stages (including degumming, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization) before it meets edible oil quality standards and becomes refined corn oil.
